Question:
I am 18 and I'm really worried that I might have Endometriosis. I have been having extreme pain right at the end of my period with urination and bowel movememnts. I have had bleeding after I have a B.M. and, oh, so much pain most of the time while my period is occuring. I am really scared, and am nervous to see a doctor. I would like to know what to do! Please help.

Answer:
Your symptoms may well be endometriosis. If the pelvic examination is normal, a trial of birth control pills is often a good first step toward making the diagnosis of endometriosis. If you are experiencing constipation and sharp pain during and after a bowel movement, you may also have what is called a rectal fissure. Increasing fibre in your diet, as well as increasing fluid intake may help. Use of Anusol HC suppositories should be considered after evaluation by your physician. While endometriosis can involve the colon, this is rare at your age. Your physician may determine that the rectum should be checked if there is suspicion of involvement with endometriosis.
